Third Grader Takes Top Honors in Festival T-Shirt Contest

The taste of victory was strawberry sweet for nine-year-old Oxnard resident Abel Leon when he recently discovered that his watercolor design won the coveted 2006 Youth T-Shirt Design Contest of the 23rd Annual California Strawberry Festival. The Mar Vista Elementary third grader who has cerebral palsy, created his award-winning cluster of strawberries with the assistance of an aid at school. The colorful design will grace youth T-shirts available for purchase Festival weekend.

During an April class field trip to celebrate at the Ventura County Maritime Museum at Channels Islands Harbor. little Leon responded with a confident “yes” when asked if he plans to wear his new T-shirt to the Festival. Thanks to his triumph, Leon and his entire family with two younger brothers will be treated as honored guests at the event.

In what has become a much-anticipated annual tradition among local schools, the contest attracted 1,118 entries from K-6th grade students from 67 teachers in 23 elementary schools in the Oxnard, Hueneme, and Rio school districts. Reaching out to youths through the educational system, the contest encourages art activities and study plans that highlight the local strawberry industry and the Festival that has become a nationally recognized source of pride within the community. A tradition of friendly classroom competition between schools bolsters the cache of quality submissions.

With Oxnard resident Leon, his winning masterpiece was brought to life with a child’s box of primary watercolors. Four succulent strawberries of various sizes float on a white background amid lettering “Yum!” and “Delicious!” Markers completed details on stems, berry seed accents and wording. Art is a new experience to the youngster who is known as a friendly student with a fun sense of humor.
